Our Programs
Dyslexia Tutoring Program (DTP) currently offers 3 programs to help students succeed in both learning and life.

Main Tutoring Program
DTP’s Main Tutoring Program offers free one-on-one tutoring, personalized to each student’s needs. We use the Orton-Gillingham approach – a proven and effective method for teaching reading, writing, and spelling to dyslexic learners. Orton-Gillingham delivers explicit, structured, sequential, and multisensory instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. In short, it’s exactly what dyslexic learners need to master decoding, letter-sound relationships, fluency, and reading comprehension.
DTP tutors are volunteers who complete 30 hours of Level I Orton-Gillingham training to prepare them for working with dyslexic students. Many tutors are current or former educators with the passion, patience, and expertise required to help you/your child learn to read. DTP ensures tutors have the necessary training, materials, supplies, and support they need to help students succeed. All tutors also undergo background and reference checks for safety and quality assurance.
Students are matched with tutors based on their availability and location. Your first tutoring session (the "Spark Meeting") is supervised to establish lesson plans. After eight sessions, we conduct an "Observation" to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. Tutors and students meet for 60 minutes at least once a week, and students’ progress is tracked through required screenings after every 30 hours of tutoring.
NOTE: All students must meet income eligibility for free tutoring and provide verification of income. Applicants must provide all requested paperwork for DTP to determine eligibility. Find out more on Eligibility and How to Apply.
Please note: Tutoring MUST take place in public settings. DTP has three fully equipped tutoring rooms that can be reserved for tutoring sessions. Or students and tutors can meet at a library, school, community center, church, or other public location.
Students may stay in this program as long as they need.
Summer Camp Program
Every summer Dyslexia Tutoring Program (DTP) sends as many school age students as we can fund to summer camp programs designed for dyslexic learners. Currently we partner with the Jemicy School (Owings Mills, MD) and the Odyssey School (Lutherville, MD). Camps run 5 days a week for 4 to 5 weeks from the end of June to end of July.
These day camps provide access to exceptional summer learning experiences in nurturing, supportive environments that truly understand dyslexic learners. Students receive intensive instruction – tailored to dyslexic learning styles – that drives engagement and delivers measurable improvement in academic skills.
Multisensory classes and activities are geared to the way dyslexic brains process information. Camp tutors are trained to work with dyslexic learning styles and bring deep empathy for those who learn differently.
But where summer camp really shines is its impact on our students’ personal growth. With others who learn as they do, students realize they are not alone. With understanding, empathy, and support, they realize they can learn. Camp is a wonderful experience that addresses all of the academic, social, and emotional challenges that dyslexic learners face.

Be Well Program
Our Be Well Program, is offered in partnership with Jewish Community Services (JCS).
Be Well provides 60-minute after school sessions focused on mental, social, and emotional wellness for our students and their families. Students and parents/guardians are invited to attend these sessions together. All sessions are held at our offices at The Rotunda, during the school year. Sessions are open to anyone admitted into our tutoring program.
These are highly interactive sessions designed to give our students and their families the tools and techniques they need to manage stress, control emotions, overcome challenges, and become more resilient. The ability to remain calm, stay focused, respond positively, and bounce back are important for anyone – but are indispensable for dyslexic learners’ success in classrooms and life.
Examples of topics include bullying, trauma, boundaries, and healthy relationships, coping with gun violence, using physical training to overcome negative thinking, and making healthy choices regarding drugs and alcohol.
Check our Events page for upcoming sessions.
