Since 1985, Dyslexia Tutoring Program (DTP) has operated on a simple belief: everyone deserves to read. For over 40 years we have been helping scholars from strategically underinvested communities overcome learning differences and unlock their potential. Because income and learning style should never limit access to literacy.
Our MissionWe remove financial barriers to literacy and ensure children and adults with dyslexia or language based learning differences have equitable access to the tools, empathy and support they need to learn and thrive. We offer free, personalized, one-on-one tutoring through dedicated, highly trained, volunteers. We use evidence-based, multisensory approaches tailored to dyslexic learning styles. And we engage in strategic partnerships that open the door not only to literacy, but to all that follows. Because everything begins with reading … and everyone deserves to read.
Dyslexic learners can learn, but they learn differently, and need to be taught differently. Unfortunately, crowded classrooms can’t address their individual needs or provide one-on-one attention. And while private resources work wonders, for many families they are unaffordable. The result? Students fall through the cracks.
This is not a small problem. Dyslexia is the most common learning difference, affecting roughly 1 in 5 people. Without proper support, dyslexic learners are three times more likely to drop out of high school, face limited career opportunities, struggle with unemployment, and face higher risk of incarceration. Here in Baltimore, that means thousands of students are going without the support they need to learn to read—simply because their families cannot afford it.
DTP provides free one-on-one tutoring, professional assessments, summer camp experiences, social/emotional learning and other services – worth thousands of dollars at market rates – for low-income children and adults with dyslexia or language-based learning differences in greater Baltimore. Our program deliveres real, measurable change in reading skills and transitions students from learning to read, to reading to learn.
We utilize proven, evidence-based methods for tutoring; recruit and train volunteers in Orton-Gillingham, an approach aligned with the Science of Reading; and engage licensed professionals to administer standardized assessments at intake and after every 30 hours of tutoring to measure students’ progress against their baseline. Our application process is a careful step-by-step effort to ensure our program can help with your reading difficulties.
DTP partners with local private schools, nonprofits and community organizations to offer our students access to a variety of resources on their journey to literacy. In addition to our year round one-on-one tutoring, DTP’s summer camp and mental wellness programs provide specialized training, individual attention, multisensory instruction, and deep empathy that are essential for dyslexic learners to thrive.
These collaborations open the door to high caliber learning experiences that support our students’ full range of needs and help extend the impact of these partners beyond their own served populations.
